About me

Hi, I’m Dave Mullen. I’m a hands-on Design Director with a passion for creating award winning digital experiences for leading brands. As a UX and UI design practitioner I use insight and data to inform design strategies and execute world class deliverables across web, mobile and emerging technology platforms. As a design leader I’ve built high performing teams of UX and UI designers, and inspired them to reimagine complex digital products and services.

It all started after graduating with First Class Honours in Communication Design from the University of Portsmouth. I entered the world of digital in 1999, joining a fast growing dotcom agency called Entranet. Next came a senior designer role with full service agency Volume where I honed my skills on accounts for tech brands including Dell, HP, Oracle and Toshiba.

In 2004 I was invited to join HeathWallace where I enjoyed the opportunity to develop my career in many exciting directions. Acquisition by WPP (as part of the JWT network) allowed HeathWallace to grow and enabled me to step up to a leadership role in the UK business. I held the position of Head of Design & Creative, managing a UX Design team of up to 20 permanent UX and UI designers.

I’m thankful for the opportunities I’ve been given throughout my career and when possible I like to support young designers through work experience and graduate opportunities. I’ve also worked with Reading University on behalf of HeathWallace, supporting a UX Design module and presenting to students studying Human Computer Interaction.

Home is Reading in Berkshire with my wife Lucy and our daughters, Cecelia and Elsie. My love of making things better has resulted in many ambitious DIY projects, mastering new skills and collecting tools along the way. I’ve visited many parts of the world - even spending two years living in Papua New Guinea. Art, architecture, garden design and sustainability keep me inspired, and cycling keeps me fit. One day I’ll learn to play my bass guitar that’s currently gathering dust in the loft!
